The rhythm of your breath is directly related to your psychology. Wow, really?! In addition, your physical conditions can also affect your rhythm; ie. lung congestion, asthma, exercise, sexual activities, etc.
When you are watching your breath, try to become aware of your psychology at the same time. How? Watch your thoughts, emotions, and the function of ego...
What is the function of ego? and how do I recognize it? When you analyze your spontaneous thoughts you can easily understand your existing emotion behind those thoughts. The satisfaction level of this existing emotion is dependant upon your functional ego. So by this way you can begin to understand the function of ego.....
hmmmmm...any comments?

The ego (ahamkara) as I understand it serves dual roles; One in 'system maintainence', and one in 'character-making'. In the first operative mode ahamkara makes sure the body can defend itself against disease, and that we can establish proper boundaries for our well-being. This 'ego-making' is a positive, vital part of living well.
ReplyDeleteThe 'I-maker' will also constantly reinforce the character attributes that we nurture. If we are practicing sadhana regularly, we will gradually begin to identify with more purified, 'better' versions of ourselves, and then, if we're adamant, we will identify with the absolute, or primordial consciousness as our sense of primary selfhood.
And that's where all the satisfaction comes from anyway, isn't it?
My love to you both; Jai Seeta Raam!
Namaste Ji! Yes, you are right. The ego has these two characteristics, but also ego is used in the sense of the existence of whole being. Whatever is manifested or unmanifested. Its nature is expanding itself by asakti (attachment) and maya (ignorance).
